All the modern-day conveniences and stressors can make people obese. The lack of sleep which often results from those stresses that come with having to live in a highly competitive environment can make you gain weight, instead of losing some.
Accordingly, depriving yourself of much needed rest can have a significant impact on your metabolism and hormonal processes. Not having enough sleep can bring about hunger pangs and so you end up eating at the wrong times or even when it is not necessary. Doing this can make it difficult for you to control your eating habits and control your weight in the process.
Sleep deprivation causes cortisol, a hormone controlling the appetite, to take in calories, storing them as excess body fat.
Since sleep deprivation also gets in the way of the normal carbohydrate metabolism, blood glucose levels are likely to increase as well.
With high glucose levels, there will be an overproduction of insulin, which can further cause weight gain and even diabetes.
