Gaining weight is like a curse. You’re tried dieting; you’ve tried biking; you’ve tried ballroom dancing; you’ve enrolled in a physical fitness program until your joints and muscles have creaked and groaned in protest. You even tried green tea and those pills that your best friend swore are the best remedy for losing weight!!!
But the most frustrating result is nada! Nothing! You’re right. You’re still as voluptuous and as huggable as Santa Claus.
Do you ever wonder why you gain weight? You feel as if you already did everything to lose weight but the weighing scale proves otherwise. Those unwanted fats are as obstinate as a mule and they are like leeches that refuse to let go once they have found their target.
There are many reasons why people gain weight and these are as follows:
Genetics
Genetics studies how living organisms inherit features from their ancestors.
This genetic make up is responsible for the way your body and your mind behaves and interacts with each other.
Commonly called a “trait”, it identifies which features are inherited, such as physical appearance, and work out the details on how they are passed from generation to generation. For example short and stout people tend to have short and stout children. There are many other types of traits and these ranges from aspects of behavior to resistance to disease.
Health Issues
Hypothyroidism is a hormone deficiency that causes appetite loss and weight gain. Another factor is food sensitivity that can happen hours later and cause bloating and swelling in extremities. Drug prescriptions can cause fluid retention, increased appetite or obesity as a side-effect. Anxiety, depression, blood sugar imbalance, diabetes, stress and so many other health problems can also cause weight gain.
Comfort
Speed and convenience such as taking the elevator instead of walking a flight of stairs, using remote-controls instead of getting up and changing the channel on television, eating in fast food or fancy restaurants instead of cooking and eating healthy, home made meals deprive you of simple, healthy habits and “unthought-of” exercises.
Lifestyle
Your personal environment can influence you to adopt poor eating habits. Being depressed, sitting at home and not being physically active induce you to become an “emotional eater” or eating when you aren’t really hungry. For instance, you do not count the number of calories contained in the junk food, peanuts, and chocolates you are munching and the soda intake you have consumed while you are watching the television.
When you eat more than what your body needs, then you will gain weight. Watching what you eat and drink would help much in maintaining a healthy and trim body. This includes doing some exercises at least 3 times a week to burn those calories or the scales would continuously tip against your favor.
Reasons why people gain weight are many and varied. Reading and asking questions from knowledgeable persons, not just your proverbial buddy, would help you understand your body and weight gain for the average person. In the end, loving your body and accepting your genetic make-up would help you understand and maintain a healthier you.
